Maria Kolesnikova detained in Belarus after resisting forced deportation at the Ukrainian border
1 min readIt has been confirmed that opposition leader Maria Kolesnikova of Belarus was detained at the border of Ukraine. She refused to cross over and was eventually handed back to authorities of Belarus after she ripped up her passport. Without her passport, she wouldn’t be able to cross over.
This has many EU officials unhappy and worried about the stability of Belarus with calls to release protesters. Josep Borrell was quotes as saying “It is clear that the state authorities in Belarus continue to intimidate or allow intimidation of its citizens in an increasingly lawless way and crudely violate both their own domestic laws and international obligations,” Borrell said. Per Eu, sanctions will be placed in a couple weeks.
Now, you may ask why I am sharing this story on A Progressive Voice. There are many reasons but the biggest reason is that this same scenario is not far fetched from happening here. It is not difficult to see where the Trump administration is going with their repeated calls for arresting protesters and calls for right wing Nationalism.
Small steps are being taken so unless you are consciously paying attention, you will not see it. It is equally as important to keep up with world events because sometimes, we can learn a thing or two.
